This is a test ride bike at our shop, and is not for sale. Prices for custom builds vary based on components and labor, starting around $3k.

This test ride bike is built with a vintage dark bronze Mavic 26" wheelset, vintage indexed Shimano Deore XT thumb shifters and derailleurs, on a 2x7 wide range drivetrain with a matte black GRX crankset. Black Tektro linear pull V-brakes and Lizard skin grips, vintage bars from a 90's Skykomish Marble Point, vintage quill stem, black women's Brooks suspension seat (and pairs perfectly with a brooks triangle frame bag). We've tricked it out with cushy, supple 26x1.8" René Herse Naches Pass Endurance tires for smooth rides on roads and light trails. This bike is solid, springy, and surprisingly light and zippy. It's named after a horse but kind of reminds me/Summer of a grasshopper.

Beautifully lugged steel Rivendell frame made in Taiwan, in the shimmery, glossy limeolive green color, with gold and black accents and a silver Appaloosa horse head badge. Plenty of mounts for customization.

Please reach out to schedule a test ride appointment with us to check out this bike, and if you love it, we can order and do a custom build on a Rivendell bike just for you. This one is a 46cm frame

Some notes on the Appaloosa from Rivendell:

The Joe Appaloosa is as good an all-around bike as we make. It’s 100 percent perfect for 90 percent of the riding you’re likely to do, and 90 percent perfect for the other ten percent. Ideal for tires between 1.5-inches and 2.2-inches .

I/Grant have ridden it on the roughest, boulder trails of Mt. Tamalpais, on the soft-soiled and leafy trails in the redwood forests overlooking the ocean way north of here, on the fire-roady local trails of Shell Ridge and Briones park, and on thousands of commute miles and Trader Joe’s runs. All with the same smoothish treaded 1.75-inch tires and wide-range gearing.  When I wear those out, I’ll go a bit fatter.

The Appaloosa has equal amounts of everything we like about bicycles. As versatile and all-around useful as you could ask for, with beautiful, unique-to-Rivendell lugs, crown, and graphics.
